Background History

In December 6,1492, Columbus exploredthis land. Haiti's native Arawaks fell victims of the Spanish explores. In 1697, Haiti became the French colony of Saint-Dominique, which became a leading sugarcane producer dependent on slaves in the Americas. In1791, the slave populationincrease to aprximatelly 480,000 and started a revolution for their independency. Napoléon Bonaparte tried to suppressed the independence movement, dut he felt. In 1804, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, gave the new nation the Arawak the name of Haiti and it becomes the world's first independent black republic.

The revoution wrecked Haiti economy. Because of the war between Haitians and Santo Domingo, Haiti get in a bankrupt. To iprove its economy Haiti accept a U.S. custom reseivership from 1905 to 1941. Occupation by U.S. Marines from 1915 to 1934 brought stability. One important fact to understand why is in poverty, is that Haiti is the most densely populated nation in the Western Hemisphere.

The country was controled by the military troops of Haiti, but the people wanted a change and wanted a democratic governmet. To make it possible the people elected Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a leftist Roman Catholic pries to bring a good government to their land. The millitary troops didn't like this and took control again of Haiti. U.S. military forces that defended democracy arrived in 1994, and put in the power Aristide, but U.S. soldiers and UN peacekeepers left in 2000. Haiti's government, however, remained ineffectual and its economy was in ruins.

Haiti has the highest rates of AIDS, malnutrition, and infant mortality in the region. This is very hard to say but they are the only responsibles for their status, because the people of the country are damaging their own land and they didn't make anything to improve it. In 2000 Aristide was reelected so the people think that democracy was finally going to function, but again Aristide lost control and a revolt started again. U.S. and France tried to restore calm in the country but they couldn't do it and Haiti today still the same, like it was a 100 years ago.

After numerous delays, Haiti held elections on Feb. 7, 2006. The elections, backed by 9,000 United Nations troops, were seen as a crucial step in returning Haiti to some semblance of stability. The people doesn't like the procedures and once again they remain equal.
